Birth Doula Services
How we approach birth doula support
We believe that birth is not an illness or condition, but a normal, natural and exciting event. We also believe that birthers intuitively know how to labour and birth, and that everyone caring for and supporting them needs to trust, respect and elevate this instinct and inner wisdom.
We believe birthers have the right to give birth with access to routine medical interventions, and that if these interventions become necessary or desired, all information needed to understand them and make a fully-informed decision must be provided. Education and information is paramount as it empowers people to make informed choices about their health, as well as to affirm and trust their intuition and instinct.
We believe the intention of labour support is to ensure birthers have a safe and satisfying birth experience as each individual person defines it. A person’s birth experience will become one of their most significant and lasting memories, and has been proven to have an enduring effect on the physical and mental health of the birther, baby, and partner. Cultivating and supporting these early relationships between parents and their infants is paramount as they have implications not only for the success of each family, but for society as a whole.
As birth doulas, we draw on our professional training, knowledge and personal experiences to provide physical, emotional and informational support to the birther and their partner. We physically support the birther using different comfort measures and techniques during their labour. We emotionally support the birther and their family by providing continuous reassurance, love and making space for whatever feelings come up. We advocate for the birther and for their family by providing research-based evidence prenatally, as well as by making space for the family’s desires during labour and birth. Our role in no way takes away from or replaces the role of the partner; instead, our presence allows the partner to be involved to their own level of comfort and participation. We show up ready to work as a team with your medical care providers to help ensure a safe AND satisfying birth experience for your family. It is important that you know that we cannot guarantee a particular outcome for your birth, but that we will be a consistent reflection of your values throughout your birthing journey.
